The Courier Lives!

Ford's Mini Truck Still Sold in Mexico

Living in Southern California puts us close to the border of Mexico, and although the streets aren't exactly flooded with Mexican-registered vehicles, you do see them periodically. A lot of the time, they're essentially identical to the American models, save for the metric speedometer.

But Mexico does have some unique models that aren't sold north of the border. Mini Truckin's intrepid web producer Monica Thompson caught a glimpse of one of these rare jewels on her drive in to work. She said, "I saw this little Ford truck thing that said "Courier" on it with Mexican plates."

My own curiosity piqued, I did a little digging around, and got some info on this south-of-the-border special. The Courier is essentially a little delivery truck along the lines of the Plymouth Scamp (remember those?) and the Rabbit-based VW pickup of the 1980s. Hardly a fireball, the courier is powered by a 95-horsepower 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine with a menacing 103 lb./ft. of torque. But not so long ago, that was about on par with what most Mini Trucks were making (Mazda B2000, the Iron Duke-powered S-10, etc.)

Although it's not a traditional body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive truck, I still think this could make a cool custom mini. If they did offer it here, I'd vote for a stouter powerplant, and a little beefier rubber (looks like it's riding around on four spares, huh?) But this little runabout shows promise. What do you guys think?
