We are hours away from picking up a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X for a wild week of testing. What does this have to do with mini trucks, you may ask? Absolutely nothing - it's just something cool that I'm super excited about! Raised on my '99 Chevy S10 and recently "graduating" to an '86 Mazda B2000, I have pretty much piloted mini trucks throughout my "driving career." I have truthfully not spent much time behind the wheel of anything else, and frankly, I've never been into cars that much (just mini trucks). In fact, going on Truckin's Of The Year testing in October 2006 was the first time I had really even driven a fullsize truck. I was always the kid who dreaded driving someone else's vehicle, never volunteering for such an experience.
However, during my last year in college, about two years ago, I did notice and even begin to take a liking to the Subaru WRX's and Mitsubishi Evo's. Why? The just seemed cool to me. The looked cool, sounded cool, and in my mind, were mini trucker-approved. I know you stop and watch rally racing when it comes on TV - I do the same thing. On March 20, 2007, a year and some change ago, I had started a forum thread named "If you could have any CAR, what would it be?". I had said the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. However, I never expected anything to come of that, of course.
As the hour approaches, I am finding myself nervous about this up-close and personal visit. I fear that this encounter with horsepower and handling is going to "ruin" me, as all I know are a pair of gutless mini trucks. I will keep you guys posted on how my love affair with the EVO goes. Although I am not particularly crazy about the '08 styling compared to the previous Evos, some say that passion can grow over time; we'll see. Stay tuned, because it gets even better (or worse, we'll see!) Tomorrow I will tell you WHERE we're taking the Evo over the weekend...
