Yesterday's work day concluded with a field trip to Mitsubishi Motors North America, to pick up the Evolution. Located in Cypress, CA, the Mitsubishi Headquarters was big and beautiful. With Mitsubishi vehicles scattered throughout the grounds, we even came across the off-road Raider that co-worker Jason Gonderman had ridden in for the 2007 Baja 1000. The car set aside for us was an Octane Blue Pearl 2008 Lancer Evolution GSR (Grand Sport Rally), a baseline model running about 32K. Featuring Recaro sport seats, Brembo brakes, a 2.0 liter MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control system) I4 turbocharged/intercooled 4B11 engine with 291 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, and 18 inch Enkeis, it's clear that we're in for some fun. If you haven't noticed, these new Evos don't look like the former ones. I am still waiting for my passion to grow for this new style. I understand that the X might be more refined, drivable, elegant-looking, grown-up, etc. While others have been trying to convince me these are good things, I remain nearly heartbroken. To me, it's kind of like calling the Colorado the new S10, or wishing for a Toyota pickup even though what is offered is a Tacoma. If you're used to driving a modified mini truck, like I am, then you've probably already sacrificed luxury and comfort for a badass stance; I'd take raw over comfort. A good time to be comfortable is while you're in bed, asleep. As you can see, I can be stubborn sometimes. But, feelings do change, so we'll see. However, aside from what it looks like, this car can move, which is a real treat and real eye-opener, for me. Although I have heard that these cars have come a long way with regards to safety and handling, with Super All-Wheel Control and other features, I'm sure that, IF lacking respect for this car, I could wrap it around a pole pretty easily. It's quite impressive and really made me grin ear to ear. I can now say that I've been in an Evo!
