Tonneau Cover Restoration: Part 3 - Choosing The Right Product

Choosing the right product is important when it comes to detailing.

A product that is not matched to its application might be ineffective, take longer than necessary, or even worse, may cause more harm than good. Always test a small area first before diving into your project.

For this tonneau cover project, we left choosing the right product to Mike Pennington. He selected the M105 Professional Ultra-Cut Compound, part of the Mirror Glaze line. As indicated on the bottle, this compound is an "extra heavy cut", topping the chart. This ultra-fast cutting compound, with super-micro abrasives, removes 1200 grit or finer sanding marks, scratches, defects, acid rain, and severe swirls, leaving a great finish.

The next step in our tonneau restoration project included M205 Professional Ultra-Finishing Polish, also from the Mirror Glaze line, to produce a deep, restored gloss and rich color reflection. This stuff was launched at SEMA last year. With a much lighter cut, this finishing polish wipes off fast and has a smooth-glide buffing feel.

We sealed the deal with Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0. This formula includes Hydrophobic Polymer Technology (say that fast three times!), which basically means water beads up and glides off your paint in a way you've never seen before, and other nasty things, like oxidation, corrosion, and UV rays, stand no chance against your paint.
